HUSKY NEWSROOM: first day of school

Tuesday, August 31 marked the first day of the 2010-11 school year for Fairmont Prep. Students began in the gym for a welcome from our ASB President, Sakib Dadi; Headmaster, Mr. Robert Mendoza; and several presentations about activities, schedules & counseling, and uniforms. Students then met their faculty advisor, and headed off to classes for the day. It's going to be a great year!

Students check in to see who their advisor is and pick up their class schedule.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: new student orientation

All incoming freshmen and new students to the Prep attended New Student Orientation on Monday, August 30. The Prep's ASB served as small group leaders to tour new students, help them meet one another, and check out where their classes are. We can't wait for the first day of school tomorrow!

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: the freshmen experience

The 3rd Annual Freshmen Experience was held August 26-27 for the Class of 2014. This annual overnight event is always a hit, and allows the freshmen to meet one another, learn about what to expect at the Prep, and have some fun! ASB coordinated all activities for the Freshmen Experience, and it included lots of small & large group activities, a panel of current students, watching our girls volleyball team in a scrimmage (they won!), building Fairmont's largest banana split, and watching a movie in the theater. Girls spent the night in the theater, and guys slept in the MPR. Breakfast the next morning was with our faculty so the freshmen could meet their teachers. It was a fun event!

ASB officers hosted a panel so freshmen could ask questions about HS.

Fairmont's largest banana split - yum!

It extended all the way across the MPR!

Fun activities at the Freshmen Experience.

Welcome, Class of 2014!

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: student government retreat

The Prep's 41 student leaders and five ASB advisors traveled to Palomar Mountain (just north of San Diego, outside of Temecula) for a two night, three day retreat August 22-24. This annual retreat provides an opportunity for student leaders to bond, get valuable training, and plan events for the upcoming school year.

The first night of this annual retreat always includes a challenging but fun night hike. Mr. June Yoon, Junior Class Advisor, led us through the dark night as an opportunity to think about the year ahead, get outside our comfort zone, and provide support to one another as we endured this challenge.

We spent our days in meetings to plan the 2010 Homecoming & Spirit Week theme and activities, coordinating back-to-school activities, and setting goals for the upcoming year - oh, and we had a little bit of fun doing team building activities, too!

We were thrilled to have our Prep leadership team join us for our second night of the retreat to hear about our goals and plans for the upcoming year. It was also a great opportunity to meet the Prep's new Dean of Students, Mr. Kiki Mendoza.

The highlight of the ASB retreat was once again our campfire, held on the last night. The campfire provides time for us to enjoy s'mores and each other's company, and to get to know one another on a deeper level.

The 2010-11 ASB officers and advisors can't wait for the new school year to start, and know it's going to be the best year yet at the Prep! Go Huskies!

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: leadership camp

Seventeen Prep student leaders attended leadership camp in July, sponsored by the California Association of Directors of Activities (CADA), and held at UC Santa Barbara. The theme "the Spirit of Aloha" was appropriate for the beach-side dorms and many fun activities. Students were broken into small groups to help plan events and activities throughout the camp that mirrored events they might have in their own schools.

The Prep's activities director, Wendy Faust, served as a camp staff member for the second year, and was in charge of the camp newsletter.

These student leaders cannot wait for the new school year to implement the many new ideas they gained. Aloha!
