WEEK IN REVIEW: april 25-29

Go, Speed Racer!
Ben Truslow, Class of 2013, is a track racer and recently got second at the USGPRU race at the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. "He rode really well," shared John Truslow, Ben's proud father.

This second place finish puts him tied for fourth nationally. "But that is with only one race so far," shared John. "As the season moves on, we hope to move up," he finished.

Ben recently went for some training in Las Vegas with the Yamaha Champions School. Here is a picture of Ben on one of their Yamaha R6 bikes.

ADVANCED STUDIES: ap & ib testing exam schedule

AP and IB exams are approaching next week. The Prep has more than 250 students testing this year, and taking more than 550 exams in a little over two weeks of testing. These exams are very important to our students, parents and to us all as a school.

Most of the exams will be given in the gym or the library (see schedule of exams and locations for specifics).

TEACHER FEATURE: mr. james liuzzi

Mr. James Liuzzi is a new addition to the prestigious math department at the Prep this year. He has a very funny sense of humor which helps students learn math more easily. Mr. Liuzzi has been teaching math for the past 15 years, but before that he was an investment banker. He made the big decision to change his career path and teach math because he wanted to make a difference in children’s lives and his own.

Mr. Liuzzi loves the outdoors and is an avid camper, kayaker, and fisher. Mr. Liuzzi loves the Prep, in spite of the short time he has been here, due to the energetic and bright students that have come his way. He appreciates the supportive environment from the administration and parents, which allows him to challenge his students and make them learn things about math that they never would have thought they could learn. Mr. Liuzzi firmly believes that Fairmont Prep's math program is “head and shoulders above” many other high schools in Orange County.

ATHLETICS: updated this week in sports

There are some changes to this week's sports schedule, particularly in the baseball game times and locations. I’ve highlighted in red exactly what the new changes are. I’m sorry for whatever inconvenience this might have caused but as we come down to the end of the season and all of our league schools have games to make-up after recent rainouts, we are trying our best to make it work for all.  For the duration of the week this is where we stand schedule wise for Golf, Tennis, Softball and Baseball.

TEACHER FEATURE: senora andrea dallochio

Senora Dallocchio is new to the Prep this year, but has already made a place in the hearts of all of her Spanish students, who describe her as very sweet and understanding. This understanding might be related to the fact that Senora Dallocchio has studied psychology and is constantly applying what she has learnt to helping her students succeed. Senora Dallocchio has been teaching Spanish for the past 18 years, not just in the United States, but also in her homeland Argentina and Canada. Some of Senora Dallocchio’s hobbies include singing, dancing, and taking long walks on the beach with her husband. She loves her experience teaching at the Prep so far and this is mainly due to the diverse backgrounds of her students. As much as Senora Dallocchio loves the Prep, her students love her more and hope she continues to teach at the Prep for many years to come.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: commissioners for 2011-12

The Prep's 2011-12 Executive Council and ASB Advisor interviewed nearly 50 outstanding candidates for ASB Commissioner positions for next year's student government. Congratulations to the following students who have been appointed to positions to serve their school:

TEACHER FEATURE: mrs. jennifer mcadam

Mrs. Jennifer McAdam has been a chemistry teacher at Fairmont Prep since 2009. She teaches both honors and CP Chemistry classes. A student interviewed her so we can get to know her better.

  1. What do you like about teaching high school? And why did you decide to teach Chemistry? "I like working with kids and I have always loved chemistry. I think chemistry is a fun and exciting subject and want to share my enthusiasm for chemistry with the Fairmont Prep students. I want them to see that even though it can be a challenging subject it is incredibly interesting and exciting also. I came from teaching college the last few years and I decided to teach high school because I wanted to get to know my students better and really have the chance to show them limitless possibilities that chemistry has."
  2. It’s been two years since you first started at Fairmont. How do you like the school and the students? "I love Fairmont and the students. The students here are so smart and very amusing to work with. They are so smart and such great kids! We love doing experiments as much as possible. There is nothing like learning through application."
  3. What is the best memory that you had with the students in your chemistry classes? "The best memory I have was watching all the final project videos; they were on acids and bases The students were very creative. It’s great seeing not just their ‘science’ side, but also getting to see their creative sides. Very entertaining!"
  4. If you could take the students on a field trip to learn more about chemistry, where would you take your students? "I would take my students to the Nuclear Power Plant in San Onofre. I think it would be wonderful if the students got to see how a nuclear power plant works. It would be a great learning experience."

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: happy un-birthday to you spring rally

The freshmen took on the juniors in the obstacle course

The Prep's ASB hosted the last rally of the school year today, and the theme was "Happy Birthday!" It was everyone's un-birthday, and we celebrated in style. All spring sports teams were introduced and celebrated for their accomplishments this season. Go Huskies!

The Classes of 2012 & 2014 tied for spirit points in the rally, and earned points from singing "happy birthday" the loudest, wearing class colors, competing in an obstacle course, and decorating their class section. Congratulations, juniors and freshmen!

The class posters were some of the best we've seen this year:

After the juniors won the challenging obstacle course race, the teachers took a turn with the English department battling the science department. The science ladies had Dr. Terra, Mrs. Terra, and Mrs. Saldamando racing on their behalf, and they finished in first place! Congratulations, ladies! Enjoy this video of the science department in their winning moment:

TEACHER FEATURE: mr. nick ochoa

Mr. Nick Ochoa is completing his first year teaching at Fairmont Prep, but this is not his first year here in general. Mr. Ochoa is  Prep graduate from the Class of 2004. A few of Mr. Ochoa's hobbies include watching baseball, playing video games, watching movies, and making movies. Mr. Ochoa was inspired to become a teacher by his interactions with teenagers and seeing his influence on them. He enjoys teaching history specifically, because he is able to make the material enjoyable and break it down easily. When asked, "What dead historical figure would you go spend a dinner with?" Mr. Ochoa responded that he would eat dinner with Franklin D. Roosevelt due to the fact that he was able to be a good and effective leader in a tough presidential term. One fact that people may not know about Mr. Ochoa is that he worked on a documentary called Teenage Paparazzo that is soon set to come out on DVD. Mr. Ochoa is thrilled to be part of the Fairmont family.

MUSIC: trophies earned in competition

Fairmont Prep's concert band, concert choir, and show choir competed at the Disney Music in the Parks Festival on Saturday, April 9th. Concert band played their way to another superior rating. The choirs had the tough judges this time as both groups danced away with excellent ratings. We were very surprised to find out that no high school choir this weekend received higher than an excellent rating.

I am very proud of the music students – at how much of themselves they pour into their performances. We will be sharing their performances with the Prep campus during the Spring Concert Tuesday, April 12 in a school-wide assembly during the day, and then again in the evening at the Prep theater at 7 p.m. Please don’t miss this opportunity to see our amazing music program doing what they do best!

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: grad nite for the class of 2011

The school year begins to wind down for the seniors as graduation is just six weeks away! The Class of 2011 will participate in Disneyland's annual Grad Nite - this year is the 50th anniversary of Grad Nite at Disneyland! All seniors received permission slips earlier today with details for Grad Nite. We've received many requests from students and families to allow them to spend time together following the graduation ceremony, and we've listened! Grad Nite will be held the night after senior finals end, Thursday, May 19th. We hope this will enable all of our graduates to attend and celebrate together as a class.

The Class of 2011 has done a fantastic job of fundraising over their four years at the Prep, and the current Class Officers voted to offset the cost of Grad Nite for any member of the Class of 2011 who chooses to attend - this is a savings of more than $20 per student! For only $50, you can spend a memorable evening with your friends to celebrate your high school graduation!

Disneyland has a very strict dress code for Grad Nite, as well as a list of items that are not allowed. Please pay close attention to this list, and see Mrs. Faust or Mrs. McAdam with any questions.

Permission slips and payment are due back to Mrs. Faust or Mrs. McAdam by Friday, May 6th.

TEACHER FEATURE: mr. michael wheeler

Mr. Michael Wheeler, a California native, is a charismatic and motivating teacher who has worked at Fairmont for eight years. He has taught an array of classes ranging from 9th-11th grade English, IB Philosophy, writing classes, and a variety of different electives.

Mr. Wheeler graduated Cal State Fullerton as English major, but didn’t immediately start teaching English. He spent years working in the car industry, working on cars, and driving trucks all across the country. He even worked in some big name car companies such as Honda and Chevrolet.

In 1999 though, Mr. Wheeler decided to pursue a career in teaching English. He worked in local schools including John F. Kennedy High School, and Saddleback Valley Christian High School, and in 2003 found himself at our own Fairmont Prepatory Academy. He has certainly made his mark at Fairmont, known as the awesome English teacher who is in love with the book The Great Gatsby. He has served as the boy’s and girl’s golf teams faculty advisor, involved with comedy sports, has served as the National Honors Society advisor, and has also gone on a cornucopia of travel week trips, which include Japan, Italy, England, Florida, and Fiji. In his free time he loves to get out and play golf, watch the shows Dexter, and The Tudors, and eat Costco churros. Mr. Wheeler is a young, hip, and cool English teacher so make sure you stop by Room 3 and say “what’s up” to him!

TEACHER FEATURE: mr. steven duxbury

Mr. Steven Duxbury has been teaching at Fairmont for eight years now. He teaches the IB History of the Americas 1 and 2, and AP Macroeconomics courses. He enjoys to riding motorcycles, playing baseball, watching films, playing video games, and occasionally plays basketball in his free time. Mr. Duxbury's interest in history was sparked by his 10th grade history teacher who made history exciting for Mr. Duxbury. When asked, "What dead historical figure would you go spend a dinner with?" Mr Duxbury responded that he would go out with President Andrew Jackson, due to his chivalrous behavior in defending his wife's honor. One fact that people may not know about Mr. Duxbury, was that he was featured on TV as part of the Crystal Cathedral (present-day) Youth Choir. Fairmont is fortunate to have a caring teacher like Mr. Duxbury.
