EVENT RE-CAP: Open House

Fairmont President Mr. Jackson cuts the ribbon to commemorate the
Grand Opening of the College and Counseling Center
January 17th marked the grand opening of our Counseling Offices, Open House and a conference home game for our boys basketball team.  As always, Open House is an opportunity for Fairmont Prep parents to see what their students have been working on in the classroom and for prospective families to learn more about the amazing campus we have.

The grand opening of the new counseling offices, located in the middle of the high school building kicked off Open House.  The new location allows students and teachers to communicate on a consistent basis with our helpful and eager counselors.

Cheerleaders Pump Up the Crowd and Cheer the Huskies on to Victory!
To round out the evening, Fairmont Prep Huskies basketball team won their second conference game against Orangewood Academy by a score of 60-52. The big victory showcased our growing and competitive sports program!

STUDENT ACTIVITIES: Fairmont Prep Debaters Compete on National Stage

Fairmont Prep debaters traveled to Arizona State University this past weekend (January 10-13) to participate with 56 other schools at the Southwest Championship Speech and Debate Tournament. All four two-person Fairmont teams competed in the varsity public forum debate division that included 106 teams overall. All teams participated in six preliminary rounds, after which 32 teams were invited to compete in the first of five sudden-death elimination rounds. The teams needed a 4-2 record with qualifying speaker points to advance to the elimination rounds. The following records reflect the efforts of the Fairmont students, all of whom (with the exception of two students) are in 9th and 10th grades:
Kayla Bach/Jessica Chung: 5-1 (losing in the first suddent death elimination round on a close 2-1 decision)
Austin Kaidi/Anjali Narang: 4-2 (failing to advance based on a speaker point tiebreaker)
Meeran Ismail/Justin Lee: 3-3
Nicholas Palmer/Milan Mistry: 3-3

TOP 50 SPEAKER RANKINGS:
Kayla Bach: 38th speaker
Milan Mistry: 42nd speaker

Four Fairmont debaters will travel to Emory University to compete in one of the largest annual debate tournaments at the end of January. We wish them the best as they continue to represent Fairmont on the national debate circuit.

ACADEMICS: IB Diploma Program

The IB Diploma Program is designed as an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepare students for success. IB Diploma seniors must write a 4,000-word essay on a topic of their choice ranging from history to philosophy.

Mrs. Montenegro’s Theory of Knowledge class has been working diligently throughout the first semester to complete their essays. Many students did find it challenging to choose a topic that was broad enough to write 4,000 words. However, once the seniors began compiling a list of primary and secondary sources and meeting with their extended essay advisor, the majority of the hard work was already done. Great job seniors!
