ACADEMICS: College Fair

Tuesday October 14, 2014, Fairmont will host their 11th annual College Fair/Community Open House night! Over 60 college admission officers from all over the country will attend this event. This is a unique opportunity for Fairmont students to speak to admissions officers and ask any questions they may have regarding the programs, student life, or academics at that institution. Last year, a majority of the institutions had email sign-up sheets and pamphlets for your use and reading.
We encourage everybody to attend this event, whether you are a freshman, or a senior, this event is a free resource for you that isn't available at every school! We hope to see you there!

When: October 14, 2014
Time: 6:00 pm
Where: Fairmont Preparatory Academy (2200 West Sequoia Ave, Anaheim)

Counselor Interview regarding College Fair with Mrs. Julie Weems

1. When is the College Fair?
The 11th annual College Fair is on Tuesday October 14th, 2014.

2. What is the College Fair?
The college fair is an opportunity for students and families to learn about a variety of colleges.
The representatives for each college are often the ones reading the applications, so the college
fair we have at Fairmont Prep facilitates good connections.

3. What is the importance of the College Fair?
The significance of the college fair is to learn about schools you may not have thought or known
about before. Although a student may have their mind set on a certain college, at the college
fair, a student is given the opportunity to see schools in a quick fashion. Exposure to a
variety of schools prior to application is of the utmost importance.

4. Is there anything unique/new about the college fair this year?
This year there are two events in one night, which equalizes infinite opportunities. Along with
the College Fair for current students at the Prep, there is the Community Open House for
prospective students for the Prep at the same time. These two events are open to all Fairmont
families, including junior high campuses. Attendees at either event will be able to
cross over to the other event if curiosity hits.

5. How many colleges are attending this year's College Fair?
This year, we are expecting over 100 schools; the largest college fair Fairmont
Prep has ever held, put together by the college counselors.

6. What should students ask at the College Fair?
Students should ask questions that are important to them, not questions that anyone could find
online. For example, rather than asking, "What is your average SAT score?" ask questions
regarding different ranges of interest, financial aid, scholarships, study abroad, etc.

7. What opportunities will the College Fair bring this year?
The main opportunities this year are the personal connections with the colleges. It is only an hour
and half long event, and the benefits are endless. It is one of the best events that you could attend
this year, as a learning opportunity for students and parents.

8. Do you have any advice or other notes for others attending this year's College Fair?
Visit schools that you know about, or visit a school you have never heard of before! It is okay to
stumble and not know what's coming at you, because that is the essence of risk taking and
opportunity. Also, students and parents can attend for free!

  3. I went to the college fair last year but as a junior didn't think it was important, so this year I am definitely going. Great job to our counselors for getting so many colleges to come and giving us this opportunity.

  4. I went to the college fair last year as a freshman and got so much information about so many different colleges. I am unfortunately unable to attend this year due to a conflicting volleyball game. I am very disappointed about this.

  5. This year's college fair had an amazing turnout and was extremely informative. I was especially glad to see New York Film Academy and to talk to their admissions rep and was pleasantly surprised by a few other universities. You can never start prepping for college too early.
