Prep Newsletter September 4, 2015: ASEP Students Attend AIAA's Space 2015 Conference

On Wednesday, September 2nd, the Advanced Science and Engineering Program (ASEP) students had the privilege of attending the Space 2015 Conference at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAIA) in Pasadena. Upon arrival, students met with an AIAA Director, toured exhibit halls, and spoke with industry leaders, including Ms. Keyke Reed who gave a special presentation at the NASA exhibit. NASA Technology Mission Directorate Ms. April Clause spoke to the students about her educational experiences and work at SpaceX. Next, Ms. Michelle Lucas discussed the path that led her first to NASA and then to operating Higher Orbits, a “non-profit that helps launch students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), as well as Leadership and Teamwork”. Ms. Lucas also discussed her time as an astronaut instructor and current role managing astronauts. The concluding speaker was Dr. Alvin Yew, Program Manager for NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC). Dr. Yew discussed his experiences as a Space Biologist and the importance life science experts play in the space program. Each of the speakers shared stories and gave advice for students pursuing science and engineering careers.
